Awra Amba’s 40th anniversary video21 Oct 2012, Posted by Project update in
want to share a short film that Serdar and I made for The Finnish Foreign Ministry’s website (global.finland.fi), which was published yesterday. The film tells the story of Awra Amba’s 40th anniversary in September 2012, held in the village’s own community hall. Over 500 guests were hosted over the course of 2 days, including representatives from Government, NGOs, grassroots organisations, journalists, researchers and former enemies of Awra Amba (neighbouring villagers).
The film features gender expert Yelfigne Abebaz from UN Women and Firew Kefyalew from the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, as well as community founder Zumra Nuru and community member Gebeyehu Dessalo. We look briefly into the history of Awra Amba in the last 40 years, as well as ponder the future of the community. Please note that the captions and subtitles are in Finnish only. We are working on an English version which will be posted soon.
